Animal Spotlight: Hummingbird
Hummingbird
Hummingbirds while in flight have the highest metabolism of all animals, a necessity in order to support the rapid beating of their wings. Their heart rate can reach as high as 1,260 beats per minute.
They also consume more than their own weight in nectar each day, and to
do so they must visit hundreds of flowers daily. Hummingbirds are
continuously hours away from starving to death, and are able to store
just enough energy to survive overnight.
Hummingbirds are capable of slowing down their metabolism at night,
or any other time food is not readily available. They enter a hibernation-like state known as torpor.
During torpor, the heart rate and rate of breathing are both slowed
dramatically (the heart rate to roughly 50 to 180 beats per minute),
reducing the need for food.

Star Spotlight: Eddie Albert
Prior to World War II,
and before his film career, Albert had toured Mexico as a clown and
high-wire artist with the Escalante Brothers Circus, but secretly worked
for U.S. Army intelligence, photographing German U-boats in Mexican harbors. On September 9, 1942, Albert enlisted in the United States Navy and was discharged in 1943 to accept an appointment as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa in November 1943, when, as the pilot of a U.S. Coast Guard landing craft, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore (and supervised the rescue of 30 others), while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire.
